20 분의 불만과 20 년의 불평의 차이... 2005-10-27

삼십여년전 미국에 처음가서 배운일이 집수리였는데
외벽을 뜯어내고 새 벽으로 바꿀 때 집주인보고 색을 고르라하면
남편들이 한결같이 부인에게 그 선택을 미루더군요.
그래서 미국은 원래 여성존중의식이 모든 면에 자리잡았나보다고 여기면서도
색깔선택 차례가 오면 습관처럼 늘 남편에게 묻곤했죠.
그 버릇을 고치게된 연유가
어느 50 대의 집주인 남자에게 "왜 무조건 부인에게 색깔선택을 미루는가" 하고
물은 후였읍니다.
그의 대답인즉슨,
"I just live here. I go to work in the morning and come home in the evening.
And (부인의 이름) she stays home all day.
If she choose the color and I don't like it,
I'll be upset for first 20 minutes and forget about it.
But if I(일부러 강조해서) choose the color and she doesn't like it,
she will complain for 20 years until the color fades away
so we have to replace the wall again."
그리고 충고를 해준 말이,
"Let her win. It won't hurt you and you can forget about it with a few cans of beer.
But if you try to win over woman, you will end up being a lonely guy in the house."
겉으로 보이는 같은 숫자,
